Fiji has over 300 islands in its archipelago, each fringed with coral reefs and lapped by warm azure waters - the diving and snorkelling are superb. Amid its wealth of natural beauty, Fiji's true magic lies in its people and the fascinating blend of their diverse cultures.
Fiji is an interesting blend of Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indian, Chinese and European influences. For nearly 50 years, until the military coup of 1987, the indigenous people of Fiji represented an ethnic minority in their own land.
When To Go - Its mild tropical climate means that Fiji can be enjoyed all year round and it is a popular escape from the winters in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Perhaps the best time to go, however, is in the dry season or 'Fiji winter', from May to October. This time of year has cooler temperatures, less rainfall and humidity, and less risk of tropical cyclones.

Fijian Money Information
You may bring the following items into Fiji duty free: 200 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco; one litre of liquor or two litres of wine or two litres of beer; and other durable goods not exceeding F$30 per passenger.
Meat, dairy products, plants, seeds and flowers are prohibited from being brought in without necessary licences from the Ministry of Agriculture.
MONEY
Currency
The currency used in Fiji is the Fiji dollar (F$). Notes come in denominations of F$1, F$2, F$5, F$10, and F$20. Coins are in amounts of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents. Despite Fiji's withdrawal from the Commonwealth, the Queen's countenance shines brightly from Fijian currency. Traditions die hard.
Always carry plenty of small change, especially small bills (which are called 'notes' here). It never ceases to amaze me how often taxis seem to be short of the proper change and expect you to make up the difference. The same scenario might occur when bargaining for an item at a craft market.
